New York Fashion Week February 2024 Recap

New York Fashion Week February 2024 Recap

All eyes were on New York as Fashion Week commenced over the weekend, bringing renowned designers, models, celebrities and other major fashion figures from around the world together. Here are the major highlights, trends, and petite celebrities’ looks you need to know about.

New York Fashion Week took place over the weekend to kick off fashion month. From Helmut Lang, to Tommy Hilfiger, Prabal Gurung, Michael Kors, Proenza Schouler, Tory Burch, Coach and more, renowned designers set the stage for what we can expect in fashion for 2024 - 2025.

For anyone who is unfamiliar, New York Fashion Week (NYFW) is a bi-annual series of events held in New York City in February and September each year to showcase upcoming as well as continuing fashion trends, and esteemed designers’ creations from around the world. New York is the first city to kick off Fashion Month each season, which will then be followed by London, Milan, and finally, Paris. These four cities comprise the major fashion capitals of the world.

Helmut Lang was among the first to take over the runways on Friday, showcasing gothic styles with a multitude of black outfits from head to toe. There were also touches of neon as well as color blocking incorporated into pieces. Color blocking is a trend that can be seen in street wear today such as with patchwork denim styles.

Prabal Gurung brought eclectic pieces from dramatic, floor length fuzzy coats to other forms of elaborate outerwear with fur like textures. Many pieces stood out in various shades of red. Black was also a prominent color in pieces throughout the collection, creating a dramatic look. Another popular theme was combining these statement colors to create black pieces with pops of red.

Tommy Hilfiger also showcased a variety of outfits featuring color combinations of black and red. Known for its classic preppy style, the brand curated looks with tailored coats, blazers and scarves. Meanwhile, Collina Strada brought a unique twist by emphasizing 90s and grunge styles, along with bright colors in this season’s collection.

Saturday was an opportunity to showcase new themes as well as cement current trends for 2024 - 2025. Beiges and browns took center stage at Eckhaus Latta, from dress pants to tops, dresses and skirts. Proenza Schouler and Khaite showcased monochromatic outfits on the runways, mainly in black or in white. Anna Sui brought a dreamy, whimsical feel with pieces featuring a full spectrum of pastel colors, as well as other unique elements such as metallic, shiny materials.

The shows didn't slow down just because the weekend was over. Monday was an eventful day filled with shows from renowned designers such as Carolina Herrera, Coach, Tory Burch, Naeem Khan, Pamella Roland and more. Carolina Herrera showcased a diverse collection with bold pieces in red, black and white, as well as elaborate dresses in floral prints.

Tory Burch showcased pieces with lots of different textures, primarily in black, white or neutral tones. Coach utilized bows in many of their pieces, further solidifying the bow trend that has been on the rise in 2024.

Michael Kors took the stage on Tuesday with an array of suits, coats, dresses and handbags. A recurring theme was monochromatic outfits. Prominent color schemes at the show included black, white, and beiges and browns.

Thom Browne, Brandon Maxwell, Frederick Anderson, and Alejandra Alonso Rojas were among the designers who wrapped up the shows on Wednesday. Brandon Maxwell’s pieces included elegant gowns and oversized handbags. His pieces included monochromatic looks in dramatic colors such as black and white, as well as abstract prints on dresses and skirts.

Thom Browne closed New York Fashion Week with an elaborate production inspired by Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Raven.” From the soundtrack featuring a reading of the poem, to the intricately crafted stage setting and stunning pieces aligning with the theme, the show brought an unparalleled ambiance to the shows this year.

To top it all off, as New York Fashion Week ended on Valentine’s Day, Thom Browne presented a huge heart-shaped box of chocolates to his partner to complete the show.

After analyzing the 5-day lineup, the top fashion trends to take away from NYFW include:

1. Monochromatic outfits

2. Maxi dresses and long coats

3. Pieces incorporating unique textures (leather, beads, shiny materials, fuzzy jackets, coats, and dresses, and other more experimental styles)

4. Color trends: red, black, white, and beiges and browns

5. Pointed toe shoes without straps (seen among many petite guests - this is a style that visually elongates the legs)

Last, but certainly not least, here are some of our favorite petite celebrity outfits and looks from this year's NYFW:
