Patterns, textures, relaxed fits, retro and grunge aesthetics, and more - from classics to novelty, here are some of the top fashion trends for 2023.
We’re one month into 2023, and I’m going to share a little bit about some of the top fashion trends for the year. What I’m going to share is based on my personal experiences, observations, and research. Various patterns, textures, fits, aesthetics and styles will be on trend and readily available to get creative with this year!
1. Patterns

Some patterned items have always been classic, like checkerboard vans. But now, we're seeing a lot more patterns like checkerboard, plaid, and other designs and prints on coats, sweaters, blouses, pants, and even accessories like hats and purses, and more.

2. Textures

3. Grunge aesthetic

It’s hard to describe exactly what grunge is, but you know it when you see it. Some grunge elements that we are seeing a lot of include more oversized, baggy fits. Darker, more muted colors like black, charcoal, etc. also fit this aesthetic. The vibe is a little skater girl, a little punk/rock/alternative, and a cool, carefree attitude.
Especially when it comes to pants, we are seeing looser, more relaxed fits on the rise. I enjoy pairing these types of pants with crop tops to provide a nice contrast. If you want to bring an additional edge, you can add bulky jewelry to the outfit. Cargo pants, leather pants, wide leg, bootcut jeans and other pants with more carefree yet edgy styles are set to be trending this year.

Which brings us to our fourth trend:
4. Relaxed fit jeans
Boot cut, straight leg, wide leg, boyfriend style, you name it - these are all similar variations of the popular denim styles this year. Other styles like flare and skinny jeans will always be classics, but we’re seeing a noticeable rise in styles like boyfriend jeans in particular at the moment.
There are a number of denim trends to note in addition to the relaxed nature that more women appear to be opting for. Lighter washes are more on trend for this year compared to darker washes, as well as moving away from overly ripped or distressed jeans.
5. Shoes: Chunky Platform Heels
Retro, chunky platforms have made a comeback this season - from boots to pumps, sandals, wedges and more.

Excellent article, Alana. I really like the checkerboard look, especially on your pants.
